Monthly Focus - July 2012

Monthly Focus:  Using Food Storage when it's a CHOICE and not a NEED

Challenge:  Try using a recipe from the blog using long term food storage, then post one of your own

Here are a few links or you can search recipes, or food storage recipes on the right hand side of this blog where it says labels.

Chicken Divan
Broccoli Cheddar Pie & Cheese Dip
Cake Mix Cookies

When searching on LDS .org for information about long term food storage I came up with a list of the commonly perceived "longer-term" food storage items so I thought I'd  try and link you to a recipe I like for each one.   Please feel free to share your recipes too.  I'd love to leave my e-mail for you but then I end up with a bunch of spam from creepy blog lurkers so just leave a comment with a way to reach you or your first name, last initial and ward and I'll find you!  (REALLY I WILL!)  You can also e-mail me at ask_kanesville@yahoo.com, but PLEASE leave a comment saying you did because sometimes I forget to check that e-mail.

Wheat (30 + year shelf life) but you need a wheat grinder, at least for this recipe)  Whole Wheat Bread
White Rice (30 + year shelf life) Lemon Rice  - substitute bottled lemon juice
Corn (30 + year shelf life) Corn Chowder  - substitute dried veggies
Sugar (30 + year shelf life) - This one doesn't even seem fair most of my recipes contain sugar
Here's Patty W's recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies using dried ingredients, they are delicious
Pinto Beans (30 year shelf life)  Pinto Bean Fudge
                                                       Chili

Rolled oats (30 year shelf life)  Honey Oat Bread
Pasta (30 year shelf life)  Baked Ziti - This is a misnomer, it's such a yummy recipe I use it as a starting off point, I usually use Penne pasta because it's what I have and frozen shredded cheese (usually a cheddar or taco blend) and you can use homemade yogurt cheese of powdered sour cream)  Pasta Salad
Potato flakes (30 year shelf life) - Crescent Rolls

Apple Slices (30 year shelf life) Apple Crisp, I haven't posted this recipe on the blog, but I've made it and love it, so I'm linking to another bloggers recipe Anissa's Kitchen

Non-fat powdered milk (20 year shelf life)Milkshake (think Wendy's Frosty)
Dehydrated carrots (20 year shelf life)
      -  You can add to any soup or slow cooker recipe
Robyn C.  if you're reading this I know you use these can you send me a recipe?

Cake Mix Cookies

Do you consider  boxed cake mixes food storage?

Why shouldn't you.  I once heard a great reason for why we should store food (aside from the emergency need situation).  It was compared to putting money in the bank.  When you buy something at a good price, that you will use later, you are saving money (and being prepared at the same time).

This recipe is especially great because all of the ingredients can be stored in your pantry and are easy to find / purchase, no freezer needed, no specialty foods just yumminess waiting to happen.

Valyn T in the Regal Country ward shared this recipe:

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies
1 15 oz can pumpkin
1 bag chocolate chips
1 Spice Cake Mix

Mix and spoon on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes

My Year Living On Food Storage: The Official Rules

OK so those of you that read this blog regularly (Hi Mom) know that this month's challenge  was to live of your food storage for one week.  Could be a serious challenge for some of us right?  Anyway  I found this blog about a family of 8 who lived for more than six months on their food storage (BY CHOICE) what a great way to learn about what we should be storing and how to use it.  I'm so excited to read all of her posts.  I'm sharing the one where she lists the rules they set up for themselves (see below).

Even more exciting she wrote down the recipes.  Eating Food Storage Recipes  I loved one comment she makes about how her family stared eating for fuel instead of fun because there was a lot of trial and error involved in their recipes.  It definitely made me want to experiment more now so that I don't end up eating "yucky" in the event of an emergency.   - speaking of this week I'm trying baking in a wonder oven and Patty is using wheat berries.  I'll paraphrase her response to that, I now know that in an emergency I do not want to have to live off of wheat berries.  Maybe she'll write a post about her experience.  Right now I'm kind of feeling the same way about the wonder oven but I'll keep experimenting.

My Year Living On Food Storage: The Official Rules: Ok, as usual, life has thrown a wrench in my plans. We have had the flu in our house this week, and on top of that, my computer died a coupl...
