An Explanation of the Upcoming Service Project

 Becoming His Heart and Hands

Dear Sisters,

One of the purposes of Relief Society is to seek out and help those in need. The Church Humanitarian Services has asked us to help organizations in our community by finding out what they need and then to help them as we can. As a Stake Relief Society Presidency, we have visited 4 different agencies in our area who are helping those in need--St. Anne's, YCC, the Joyce Hansen Hall Food Bank and The Christmas Box House.

Many of you have already participated in donating needed school and art supplies. We are so appreciative of the many items you have generously donated. Some of those items have already been distributed to children in need.

On October 10th and 11th we will be meeting together to organize, make and assemble some of the other items needed by these organizations. It is our hope that you will join us in this service project.

Wednesday, October 10th we are asking you to participate in our Give and Take. We would like you to GIVE any items of clothing, that are in good condition, and to then TAKE any items that your family could use. We will share with one another first and then sort and distribute any articles that remain. Bring your clothing items to the Original building on 4000 between the hours of 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Thursday, October 11th we hope you will join us at the Original Building between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 9 p.m. We need you to help us sew, cut, assemble, create and sort.  Listed below are some of the service projects we will be doing.

1. If you can, we would like to ask you to donate 1½ to 2 yards of fleece. When choosing a fabric pattern remember older children as well as the younger ones. This will be cut and given to the Weber Valley Detention Center Branch for a service project their young men and young women do every year for Primary Children’s Hospital. We need yardage donated, but we also need volunteers to cut the fabric to prepare it for tying. Please bring your scissors. The fleece can be left on one of the donation tables in the church foyer.

2. We are also asking for donations of hygiene items to be given to St. Anne's, YCC and the Food Bank. We will collect these items prior to the 11th, but you may also bring them and any art or school supplies the night of our service project. We will also need volunteers to assemble the hygiene kits. We are asking for shampoo, bar soap, tooth brushes, toothpaste, combs, hairbrushes, lotion, deodorant, hair ties and clips and razors. These items can be purchased at the dollar stores.

3. The Rocky Mountain Ward and the Pheasant Meadow Ward Relief Societies have already cut fabric to make bags that will hold the belongings of those in need. We will need many of you to help us sew these bags. If you have a sewing machine you could bring that night, please contact Patty Wintle, or Dianna Farr.  (Please leave a comment with your first name and last initial and I'll get these sisters your info, thanks).

4. We also need all of you crafty people to help us make Activity Boxes for the Christmas Box House and the YCC. Please look around your house and see if you have any of the following that you would be willing to share: material, boondoggle, beads, yarn, nylons, quilt batting, egg cartons, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, cotton balls, lace, ribbon, wrapping paper, and shoe boxes (to put the activity kits in).
We have been amazed at the generosity members of our stake have already shown in helping others. We are so appreciative of what you have done and are looking forward to spending the nights of the 10th and 11th with you as we work together to help one another and others.

A heartfelt thank you,

Stake Relief Society Presidency
