August Garden Checklist - Joy Bossi

I was looking around the web for some gardening advice to add here and since I've enjoyed listening to Joy in the Garden., (Joy Bossi, KNRS 105.7 FM)   I thought I'd add her August checklist here (we are a few weeks behind this year so August seems appropriate.

If you click on the link (colored text that read Joy in the Garden), it will take you to the Joy in the Garden website, it was kind of fun to read all the questions in the About section too.

AUGUST MONTHLY CHECKLIST:
  • Last spray to control worms in apples
  • Fertilize container plants weekly
  • Deadhead all perennials to encourage re-bloom
  • Pull every weed before they can go to seed
  • Visit your local County Fair!  oops, too late  Aim for the State Fair  Better still – enter something!
  • Cut back annuals by about a third for more blooms and a tidier plant – then water well and fertilize
  • Spray with Spinosad to control Walnut Husk Fly, also Peach Twig Borer affecting peaches, nectarines, apricots and cherries
  • Start checking your cucumber and zucchini plants every day and pick, pick, pick…
  • Mid month is the latest time to fertilize roses this year
  • Stalk the slimy snails – killing one will prevent 200 next year

  • Give your neighbors a treat – include a recipe for your favorite Zucchini Cookies when you ditch the squash on their porch
  • Make sure the mulch is still 2 inches deep around flowers, veggies and shrubs
  • Find a shady spot in your garden, sit back and enjoy a tall, cold glass of [insert your favorite beverage here] and marvel at the wonder of growing things!
  • Note where your garden needs extra color and tuck in a few new sparkling annuals
  • Foil Spider Mites by giving all of your plants a forceful spray with an Insecticidal Soap solution, then rinse both sides of the leaves with clear water 10 minutes later
  • Support your local Farmer’s Market
On this subject, anyone have any good zucchini cookies recipes?

If you know of a good local deal on fruit or veggies please share.   THANKS
